The Colorado Rapids finished in the cellar of the Western Conference in 2023, narrowly missing out on the Wooden Spoon. As a result, they possessed the second pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, as well as the fourth via trade with the LA Galaxy back in August. Colorado chose Wayne Frederick out of Duke with the second pick. At pick number four, a gem fell into their lap. Kimani Stewart-Baynes, a player that was widely projected to go first overall, was available for Colorado's second pick of the afternoon. It was a no-brainer.

The freshman winger out of Maryland became eligible for the draft with the new rules that now allow underclassmen to enter the process. As a result, the 18-year-old is one of the youngest draft picks in MLS history. The Toronto, Ontario native was highly linked to a potential homecoming with Toronto FC at No. 1, but the Generation Adidas winger is ultimately headed to Denver. The dynamic forward has high expectations at such a young age, but Stewart-Baynes remains unbothered.

"I don’t really feel any pressure because this is what I’ve dreaming of since I was six, so I’m definitely gonna make the most out of it," Stewart-Baynes said. "I feel like I’m very strong mentally so I don’t let a lot of external factors get the best of me. I’m ready to take on whatever obstacles come my way. I’m just gonna focus on what I can’t control and do the best that I can on and off the field."

Kimani Stewart-Baynes is strong both mentally and physically. On the field, his speed is a lethal weapon. In high school, he recorded an impressive 11-second 100 meter dash. When on the ball, Stewart-Baynes is able to turn on the afterburners. In an instant, he can change speeds and leave defenders in the dust. He prefers to cut in from his left flank and whip a ball in, or even take a strike on goal. Stewart-Baynes says his speed is the most crucial part of his game.

"The biggest parts of my game are definitely my pace and dribbling abilities," Stewart-Baynes said. "I love taking on players 1v1 and looking for a chance to create goal scoring opportunities. Additionally, I am a very direct player that is always looking to get in behind or create combinations with my teammates to create chances."

Kimani Stewart-Baynes has an immediate opportunity to become a regular MLS contributor at just 18. The Rapids are attempting to rebuild their roster after a subpar season. The winger position is wide open for the draftee. Jonathan Lewis and Calvin Harris finished the year as the starters, and the skillset of Stewart-Baynes is enough to compete for a spot in the lineup this upcoming preseason. Mark him down as one to watch as soon as the 2024 MLS season kicks off in February.
