With the No. 26 overall pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, the Colorado Rapids selected Josh Copeland, a midfielder out of Detroit Mercy.

Copeland became the first ever Titan to be chosen in the opening round of the draft and the second MLS draft pick in program history. Detroit Mercy is obviously not one of the biggest name schools in Division I, so it's quite a feat to get noticed with so many talented players representing larger soccer schools.

"Something like that means a lot especially when you get to go out and represent your team coaches and school in such a way," Copeland said of this accomplishment. "I couldn’t be more proud to be a Titan and that will always be something I will never forget."

The sophomore is coming off a three goal and five assist season across 17 appearances. He made 18 appearances in 2023 as well. Copeland was named to the 2024 All-Horizon League Third-Team for his performances.

The 6-foot-3 midfielder has spent his whole career in the state of Michigan. A native of Macomb, Mich., Copeland attended the nearby Brother Rice High School. His college was about 20 minutes away from his high school.

"Being in Michigan my entire life, this will present new challenges and opportunities for me I am ready for," Copeland said. "But, I’m proud to be the one to go and represent the state in this way and can’t wait to get out there."

Sports fans often forget about how difficult of an adjustment it can be for young adults still figuring out their identity to make such a leap of faith. In Copeland's case, he's set to depart school after just two years and make a 1,200 mile trek west, though he's prepared for the drastic change.

"Something that will be new to me is that I’ve never been to Colorado and also don’t know anyone from there either, so this will be a fresh start for me," Copeland said. "But I’m excited to see everything the city, team and state has to offer for me."

Copeland is a central midfielder that moves laterally at a high level. He has elite foot skills and is confident on the ball. He looks to push the ball into the attack and pick out splitting balls for attackers on the run. Copeland operates well in compact margins and has a calming presence.

"I like to be the guy people can rely on," Copeland said. "I think I offer a variety of different ways of play on the pitch. Whether it’s with my speed and quick first step or if I have to get out of tight spaces with my technical ability and explosiveness, which I’m hoping to utilize wherever Colorado needs me most."
