With the No. 11 pick in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, FC Dallas selected Enzo Newman, a defender out of Oregon State.
Newman featured both at right back and on the wing across his first two collegiate seasons. In 2024, he started all 12 games that he played. During his freshman year in 2023, Newman made 18 appearances as the Beavers advanced to the College Cup. Their dark horse NCAA Tournament run ended at the hands of No. 2 Notre Dame.
Dallas has made its trend of drafting Oregon State players quite apparent. The club drafted a Beaver with their first-round pick last year as well, spending the No. 3 selection on Logan Farrington. Turner Humphrey was also chosen by Dallas in that draft, along with Tsiki Ntsabeleng in 2022. Newman is the newest addition to the pipeline.
"First and foremost, I wouldn’t be where I’m at if it wasn’t for my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," Newman said. "It means the world to me to be amongst those drafted to Dallas while representing Oregon State. I think it’s a testament to the environment and culture Oregon State has, as it has consistently developed and nurtured great talent and even better people, while helping those achieve their dreams of getting drafted."
Newman was a part of the 2022 MLS Next All-Star Game, a match to showcase the top young talents among MLS academies. He had the chance to compete with some big names, such as new PSV signing Esmir Bajraktarevic and Miami's Benjamin Cremaschi.
"The main lesson I learned from being a part of the All-Star Game is that hard work and dedication truly pay off," Newman said. "Competing alongside some of the best players in my age group showed me the importance of maintaining discipline, focusing on improvement, and staying consistent. It also taught me how crucial teamwork and communication are, even when playing with new teammates, to achieve success at a high level."
The Temecula, Calif., native earned All-WCC Second Team honors as a sophomore in 2024. He assisted four goals on the campaign. He attributes his successes so far to the effort he puts in each time he touches the pitch.
"For Dallas fans who haven’t seen me play, I’d say my greatest strength is my work ethic," Newman said. "Every time I step onto the field, I give everything I have, leaving no room for doubt that I gave my all."
Newman's game is centered around his speedy movement on both sides of the ball. He loves to drive into space and leave defenders wishing they closed him down much earlier. He glides down the flank and keeps the opposition guessing with his unpredictability. Newman's side-to-side shiftiness allows him to get into advantageous positions. Defensively, his pace makes him nearly impossible to blow by. He is a smart defender that uses his body positioning to win possession of the ball.
"Having played in attacking roles during my youth and transitioning to more defensive positions at a high level in college, I’ve gained a well-rounded understanding of the game from both perspectives," Newman said. "This adaptability allows me to excel in various situations, whether it’s creating opportunities up front or shutting down opponents defensively. I take pride in being a dependable and flexible player who can contribute wherever the team needs me most."
