Luis Suarez heard the noise. He's too old, his knees don't work and he can't run anymore. Tell that to his 21 goals. The same is being said in 2025 preseason, so it remains to be seen if he will prove the doubters wrong once again. The legendary striker joined Inter Miami to team up with a group of his former FC Barcelona teammates. The regular season was one for the books and Miami set the MLS points record in its Supporters' Shield run. Suarez has always been able to score goals at a high rate and that remained true in 2024 as he had one of the best consistent scoring records across the entire league.
The now 38-year-old earned a brace of both goals and assists in his first Florida Derby match. He scored and assisted in two matches against Nashville early in the season. He dropped a late match-winning double against DC United. In May, he scored a hat trick in a 6-2 beatdown of the New York Red Bulls. After a quick Copa America break, he returned to scoring form with back-to-back braces against FC Cincinnati and Chicago Fire. In another 6-2 victory, this time against New England, he added four more goal contributions in the Shield clinching win on Decision Day. The playoff run was looking up when he scored two minutes into Game 1 against Atlanta, though they were left shocked after three matches.
The Uruguayan scored 25 goals in 37 matches in all competitions in his 20th season as a professional footballer. The end of his career is looming, but he is on pace to end it on a high note. He scored 0.86 goals per 90, a number that players clocking over 2,000 minutes rarely reach. He averaged over two shots on target per game as well. Despite his scoring prowess, Suarez has always been able to set up chances for others from his striker position. He finished with 0.37 assists per 90, one of the best tallies for strikers across the league. In 2025 preseason, he has scored once and added three assists, showing his lack of intent to retire right now. Inter Miami is in for another season with its plethora of aging stars and hopes for a repeat of 2024's regular season. Suarez comes in at No. 9.
