Diego Gomez has made the move to the Premier League's Brighton and the 2024 MLS season is a large reason why. The $14m deal is one of the largest outgoing transfers the league has seen. South American talent has been arriving in MLS and using it as a springboard to get to Europe at an increasingly rapid rate. Gomez is the newest member of that growing trend thanks to his performance in the Supporters' Shield winner's midfield.
Gomez finished the 2024 MLS season with three goals and seven assists from the center of midfield. He scored in the highly anticipated opening match of the season against Real Salt Lake, finishing a combination with Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. In July, he found himself all alone on a breakaway and smashed one in, along with an assist to Federico Redondo later in the game. After that match, Gomez represented Paraguay at the Paris Olympics, amassing a goal and two assists in the tournament. Upon his return, he had scored against Toronto in his two most recent Miami contests. He assisted Suarez in Miami's upset playoff series loss to Atlanta.
The impact of Gomez on a game goes far beyond the stats, though he has the ability to get forward and put up numbers as well. Perhaps his best quality is his tackling. He won 1.72 tackles per 90. He also excels in duels, winning just under seven per match and 1.28 aerial duels as well. Gomez is a smart player that can push the ball up the pitch and pick out the right pass. The expensive MLS export will carry high expectations to England after a 2024 season that ranks him No. 61.
