Stefan Frei has still not won an MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award, which truly is a travesty. He has been one of the very best goalkeeper in MLS since he arrived in the legue. He just completed his 11th season with the Seattle Sounders in 2024 and it was another quality one. The Seattle Sounders boasted the best scoring defense in the entire league with just 35 goals conceded. They finished fourth in the West as a result and made a run back to the Western Conference Finals. Frei anchored the backline as he always does and remains one of the best at his position, even at age 38.

Frei's highest save total of the early season was a seven-stop performance against Real Salt Lake. In July, he posted three consecutive clean sheets. Seattle defeated New England 2-0, Austin 1-0 and St. Louis 2-0 during the run. Frei came alive again later in the season, as he always does. He kept four clean sheets in a five-game span heading into October. Seattle had a 4-0-1 record in those games, good for 13 points in the standings. In the playoffs, he was one of the biggest reasons the Sounders made it so far. He saved six shots in Game 2 against Houston and stopped a season-high nine shots in the playoff win over LAFC.

The Sounders have not had to worry about their goalkeeping situation in many years and they will not in 2025 either. The day will eventually come that Seattle must find its successor in net, but not quite yet. In 2024, Frei's goals against average was under one per game, at 0.95. He saved over three-fourths of the shots he faced and kept 12 total clean sheets. The Swiss keeper will enter his 16th MLS campaign in 2025 and will have similar expectations because that is just simply what he does each and every year. Frei is No. 46.
