Carles Gil was the embodiment of that one viral photo depicting a Bugatti parked at a mobile home for the New England Revolution in 2024. He was the New England Revolution and the rest of his teammates were kind of just there. There's a reason why his stats read all-time MLS career lows, the team was just not good, and he still managed double-digit assists and productive play. Gil has been truly inevitable during his six seasons as a DP in New England, he lives on the ball and opponents need to violently kick him to get him off of it. The Revs finished one point off dead last in the East and only eclipsed Chicago becuase of their No. 10.
Gil began the year with a bona fide Goal of the Year contender before people even knew the MLS season started. Down a man with a red card, he drove in on his wand of a left foot and ever so delicately curled a shot into the top left corner of new teammate Alex Bono's net. I think the point is pretty well-established already that Gil was good and his team was not, but he once again provided the lone bright spot in a 4-1 loss to Atlanta. He scored the lone goal in one of his team's nine wins during a 1-0 triumph over Charlotte. In another win against Nashville, he guided another one in from outside the box. In a first matchup against St. Louis, a slow but well-placed right-footed shot found its way off the post and in.
The 2021 MLS MVP consistently has some of the most striking passing and creating stats in the league and 2024 was no different. He created a wild 3.53 chances per 90, more than nearly any other player league-wide. No. 10's are not often known for their long balls, but Gil drops deep to collect the ball and sent 5.46 accurate long balls a game in doing so. He also crossed nearly two times per match on target. The real story-telling number is his average of 80 touches per match. The Spaniard commands the ball and his teammates are more than happy to accept his requests on each possession. The Revs have one of the most interesting roster rebuilds in recent history, dumping the entire roster bar Gil and just a handful of his 2023 teammates. The 2025 season will be an opportunity to reinvent himself with a brand new attack and team in general. Gil comes in at No. 37.
