Diego Luna broke out in 2024 and won the Young Player of the Year. He scored eight goals and assisted 12 and was a constant attacking contributor for Real Salt Lake. RSL had a flying start to its season and finished with 65 goals for, second-best in the Western Conference. The third-place finish in the West can be credited to the elite scoring and creation ability of Luna and his team. The 21-year-old will have some new partners in attack in 2025.
Luna opened his account on the season with a goal against Chicago in April during a 4-0 victory. Chicho Arango and Andres Gomez were firing on all cylinders alongside him at the time. On July 6, Luna registered a hat trick of assists along with a goal in a big 5-2 win over Atlanta United. As the season waned, Gomez left and Arango stopped scoring. This left Luna to keep contributing, as he scored in each of the last two regular season games. RSL made it to penalty kicks in back-to-back playoff games with Minnesota and dropped both of them, ending the season. Luna also earned an assist for the USMNT against Costa Rica in January camp after his nose was bloodied.
The eight goals and 12 assists for Luna showcased an incredible well-rounded season. He was the primary chance creator for RSL in 2024. The first half of the season was all positive for the team, but it quickly turned negative. Regardless, Luna was playing at a high level and those around the league are taking notice. The youngster may have a move abroad in his near future if he plays the same way in 2025. The attack is quite different this time around, so it could take some getting used to. Luna comes in at No. 33.
