What a strange, strange week in Major League Soccer. A bunch of the top teams got destroyed in MLS play, and some outside of MLS play—Hi Vancouver. LAFC is the only team making the league proud with their defeat of Club America in the Club World Cup qualification match. You know things are seriously astray when LA Galaxy wins a match in the year 2025. We are now at the halfway point for most teams in the league, how did that happen so fast? The summer is looming and there's a ton of soccer left to be played. The Week 15 Power Rankings:
1. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (-) | 0-0 D MIN

Luckily, these are MLS power rankings. They drew Minnesota 0-0 in this phase, but that's irrelevant for Vancouver right now. They looked a shell of themselves in a 5-0 shellacking exacted by Cruz Azul in the CCC final, something they had been working the whole season towards. They still sit atop the league here, but they'll have to rebound and not let this tragedy bleed into the MLS season.
2. PHILADELPHIA UNION (-) | 2-1 W TFC, 0-0 D DAL

Philadelphia had three minutes until they lost to a lackluster Toronto FC team, and just five minutes later they had already claimed three points. Kai Wagner had an unbelievable week across both games and was the Union's best player—just as he has been all season long. Philly then drew Dallas in scoreless fashion against 10 men for much of the game, so that certainly was a game they wanted to win as well. But, they still sit atop the East by over one win.
3. NASHVILLE SC (-) | 2-2 D CLB, 2-2 D NYC

Nashville SC should be ashamed of the points left on the table against NYCFC, leaving them with two 2-2 ties in their two matches of the week. That's a lot of twos. Sam Surridge is absolutely on one and has been scoring goals at will. Hany Mukhtar is returning to that form of previous years, and the team as a unit has been fantastic. With that being said, conceding two goals in the second half at home in a match they led 2-0 in is inexcusable and cannot happen if they want to remain one of the contenders in the Eastern Conference.
4. SAN DIEGO FC (+1) | 1-0 L SEA, 2-0 W ATX

San Diego followed up a rough loss to Seattle with a lovely 2-0 win over Austin FC. They weren't necessarily amazing in the match, but Anders Dreyer and Hirving Lozano both dished out assist en route to the win. It was simply just a great defensive performance and the midfield looked just fine without Jeppe Tverskov. San Diego is now into second in the West, only sitting behind the Vancouver Whitecaps and are in a solid position to remain in the top spots of the mediocre West.
5. MINNESOTA UNITED (+4) | 0-0 D VAN, 3-2 W SEA

Minnesota had one of the best weeks out of any team league-wide, drawing the top ranked team on the road and then defeating a different Pacific Northwestern side in Seattle Sounders. Minnesota played their usual sit back and hit direct over the top on the counter game, but everything changed after a slow opening 50 minutes. Four goals were scored in seven minutes, three coming from the Loons and two of those being scored by Tani Oluwaseyi. Oluwaseyi has won the striker job over DP Kelvin Yeboah as Eric Ramsay has decided to drop another midfielder into the formation, which has worked to the tune of four straight unbeaten. They also broke a streak of 10 straight games at Lumen Field—all 10 games they've ever played there—without a single point.
6. INTER MIAMI CF (+4) | 4-2 W MTL, 5-1 W CLB

Inter Miami reintroduced themselves this week as well, not that Lionel Messi ever needs to remind anyone of his sheer brilliance. He had an absurd week, scoring four goals and assisting three. They absolutely embarrassed the Columbus Crew by a 5-1 scoreline and made them look like a JV high school side. Luis Suarez did his thing as well with a goal and two assists. Miami is back, and they won't have to play an MLS game until June 28 with the Club World Cup coming up very soon, so that was quite the way to finish on a good note.
7. LOS ANGELES FC (+1) | N/A

LAFC did not play an MLS game this week, but they did punch their ticket to the Club World Cup. Denis Bouanga pulled his team into the competition by defeating Club America in extra time of a play-in game. LAFC will join a group with Chelsea as the third MLS team in the tournament
8. FC CINCINNATI (-3) | 3-3 D DAL, 2-1 L DC

A dialogue has been started about FC Cincinnati in these power rankings for weeks now, but Cincy just added an exponential amount of fuel to that fire this week. On Wednesday, they led 2-0 over FC Dallas in the first half, scored a goal to retake the lead in the 86th minute and still failed to claim victory over a struggling opponent. A few days later, they lost to one of the very worst teams in the Eastern Conference in DC United. Both of these games were played at home, meaning that FCC grabbed one out of six possible points with two games at home against poor opponents—not good. Kevin Denkey has proved he can score goals and is a pure finisher, but the rest of the team needs to wake up and also do their jobs. Matt Miazga is one guy that has not done his job since coing back from injury, but Cincy needs to keep playing through Evander and seriously figure things out.
9. COLUMBUS CREW (-2) | 2-2 D NSH, 5-1 L MIA

Yet another horrific week for Ohio clubs, as Columbus was absolutely embarrassed along with their cross-state counterparts. Nicolas Hagen had a shambolic performance in net against Miami, while one of his center backs left injured in nine minutes and the other two couldn't stop a thing. Issues are compounding for Columbus and the lack of a replacement for Cucho Hernandez at striker is catching up to them. Wilfried Nancy's claims of Jacen Russell-Rowe being an even better finisher than Cucho are about a guy that was benched for Ibrahim Aliyu. Daniel Gazdag hasn't done anything for this team and Diego Rossi is slipping. Columbus is an absolute mess and the system could only take them so far, they're now six matches without a win and the roster needs some upgrades.
10. ORLANDO CITY SC (-6) | 3-2 L ATL, 3-1 L CHI

Orlando City had their 12-game unbeaten streak snapped in style—losing twice in a week and conceding three goals in each match. It was like the Orlando of the first few matches returned. The poor Martin Ojeda created a whopping eight chances in the loss to Chicago, but his teammates did not help him out outside of his assist on the lone goal. Alex Freeman has been electric still, but he is leaving for USMNT camp. Orlando still has the tools to be one of the better teams in the East, but the two games they played during the week were horrific performacnes and cannot become the new norm once again.
11. PORTLAND TIMBERS (+1) | 2-1 W COL

The Portland Timbers took advantage of a red card to grab three points against the Rapids. Antony's form had completely disintegrated, but he returned with a goal on six shot attempts and a surprising six tackles as well. David da Costa has been elite as a creator. Jimer Fory was phenomenal on his duels and Kamal Miller held things down in the back. The goal conceded was poor defending and Felipe Mora's missed penalty stung, but Kevin Kelsy came in to win the game and keep the Timbers afloat in the West.
12. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (+3) | 1-1 D DC, 3-0 W MTL

The New England Revolution is now sneakily their two games in hand out of third place in the Eastern Conference. Obviously games in hand are far from guaranteed points, but the fact that they've got those two games in their pocket long-term will make their table position look far worse than it is. The Revs have now gone nine straight games without a loss and returned to scoring form in the second half against CF Montreal. Giacomo Vrioni had one of his best contributions for his former team with his silly red card that led to wingback domination from Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller. They will be disappointed not to get more points out of the road trip, but New England would be atop the Supporters' Shield standings if only away games counted in the table thus far. That means a lot of home games are on the way, and the Revs are quietly in a position to pounce if they can get healthy.
13. NEW YORK RED BULLS (+7) | 4-2 W CLT, 2-0 W ATL

Out of all the successes this week, the New York Red Bulls should be happier than any other team league-wide. They won both of their games, scored six goals and grabbed a clean sheet as well. They badly needed results and got two big ones, putting them back into the thick of things in the Eatern Conference. It wasn't even Emil Forsberg either, he contributed nothing. It was Eric Choupo-Moting who scored a bunch of goals in limited minutes, while Cameron Harper and Mohammed Sofo provided other attacking spark. Defensively, things were in order in a 2-0 blanking of Atlanta.
14. SEATTLE SOUNDERS (-3) | 3-2 L MIN

The Seattle Sounders had a solid run back to relevancy, but a 3-2 loss to Minnesota will stick in their heads. They got ran out of their own building during a seven-minute span in the second half. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi seemed to start the fight back, but it was immediately killed as the Sounders' defense folded. It was nice to have Jackson Ragen back, but the backline remained a bit makeshift with the injuries of Yeimar Gomez Andrade and Kim Kee-Hee, while Alex Roldan was left on the bench. Seattle will be just fine, but it wasn't a great way to push closer to Club World Cup matches against European champions Paris Saint-Germain, South American champions Botafogo and a far from measly third opponent in Atletico Madrid.
15. NEW YORK CITY FC (-2) | 3-0 L HOU, 2-2 D NSH

NYCFC is still the most confusing team in the league. Are they good, are they absolutely horrible? You would never know if you only watched them for one week, they look like a different team every game. A 3-0 home loss to former forward Gabriel Segal and the Houston Dynamo was certainly not expected regardless, there wasn't a single performance of note across the whole squad. However, when posed with a 2-0 deficit on the road in Nashville, Hannes Wolf scored a second half brace and showed unreal fight to tie the match at two against one of the hottest teams in MLS. They currently sit in the last playoff place in the East, but if they don't start delivering more consistent results, that may change.
16. CHICAGO FIRE (+1) | 3-1 W ORL

Chicago Fire destroyed Orlando City from start to finish. Hugo Cuypers scored two goals within a minute and at that point, it was simply over. Philip Zinckernagel scored what he would probably tell you is one of the worst goals of his career, but the method doesn't really matter does it? The Fire got the result without Brian Gutierrez, as he missed the game with a suspension. Chicago has gotten enough results as of late to stay in the race—they're at exactly 28 goals for and against and are right on the outside looking in within the East, but they've also got games in hand, like the Revs.
17. CHARLOTTE FC (-3) | 4-2 L RBNY, 2-0 W TFC

Charlotte FC got back into the win column with a result against Toronto FC, but victories over TFC will not get you very far in 2025. Charlotte got it handed to them at Sports Illustrated Stadium midweek, as they conceded four goals and got played off the pitch by the Red Bulls. On the bright side, Patrick Agyemang is balling again. The downside is he won't be doing that for Charlotte for the the next month, as he will be with the USMNT. Pep Biel got back on the scoresheet and is trying to get back into the form that had Charlotte playing well in the first place. David Bingham stepped in between the pipes and helped the Crown secure an important morale clean sheet.
18. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (-2) | 1-0 W LA, 2-1 L STL

For whatever reason, Bruce Arena benched all his starters without having a game for the next two weeks. That decision led the Earthquakes to a horrific loss against St. Louis—a team that just fired their manager because they hadn't won in 11 games. With Cristian Espinoza, Beau Leroux, Josef Martinez, Vitor Costa, Daniel and Rodrigues all out of the lineup, San Jose fell victim to a loss that overshadows their win midweek against the formerly winless LA Galaxy. It's simply not a good result and Earl Edwards was absolutely horrific in the game, practically handing both goals to St. Louis after saving the game on Wednesday.
19. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (+4) | 3-1 W HOU

Sporting Kansas City is quietly stacking some points. A shock 3-1 win on the road against an improved Houston team put SKC on four games unbeaten. It was nice to finally get a victory. Dejan Joveljic is finally rounding into the scoring form he showed at LA Galaxy and the remainder of the team is stepping up to help him. It still hasn't been perfect, and Khiry Shelton being a right back will forever be a mystery, but points are points and there's nothing stopping SKC from winning a few games and being right in the playoff race in a conference without many actually good teams. Santiago Munoz came off the bench to score his first MLS goal to cap it off.
20. HOUSTON DYNAMO (-2) | 3-0 W NYC, 3-1 L SKC

Having two such contrasting results in a week is almost impressive. The Dynamo went and won 3-0 on the road against NYCFC, only to get embarrassed 3-1 by SKC at home. It seemed very backwards. There's no reason that Franco Escobar shouldn't be slotted in as a starter every game, the defense is simply so much better with him in it. Felipe Andrade has been solid, but now Houston is trying to balance three solid fullbacks. Gabe Segal torched his former team in the win over NYCFC, so that was a nice unexpected contribution. Jack McGlynn is still the guy for this team. Sebastian Kowalczyk scored a lovely consolation goal in the loss, but this Dynamo team is right in the mix still.
21. DC UNITED (+4) | 1-1 D NE, 2-1 W FCC

How about DC United? The Eastern Conference is genuinely so good this season, as there are 13 teams that have shown legit sparks of form this season. For DC, they are now seven points out of a playoff spot with their incredible week. They pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the season in visiting TQL Stadium and leaving with all three points, without Christian Benteke at that. Gabriel Pirani extended his form from the New England draw and scored his second screamer in a few minutes of game time across both matches. If Pirani can finally come alive, DCU can have a whole different element in attack. The backline provided some rare contributions as well, through David Schnegg and Conner Antley. They held strong and beat FC Cincinnati on the heels of a late rescued point on Wednesday.
22. COLORADO RAPIDS (-3) | 2-1 L POR

The Colorado Rapids responded to their falloff with two straight 1-0 wins, but returned to losing ways against Portland. Wayne Frederick was sent off right before Portland scored the winning goal, so that definitely wasn't ideal, especially for a young player that spent 13 minutes on the pitch. Djordje Mihailovic scored a fabulous solo goal where he did it all himself, but he was strangely hooked in the 54th minute and it truly all went down from there. There has been a league-wide epidemic of coaches pulling their best players too early in games, and Chris Armas certainly paid as the Timbers scored two goals immediately after. There just hasn't been enough contributing players in this team and it's a complete mess. The fill-in goalkeeper in Nico Hansen, however, is not a mess and he saved a penalty kick and made seven total saves.
23. ATLANTA UNITED (-1) | 3-2 W ORL, 2-0 L RBNY

Well, it was fun while it lasted. At this point, there's no way to know exactly what to expect when at Atlanta United game kicks off—besides $22m signing Emmanuel Latte Lath not hitting the back of the net. He hasn't scored in over two months and it probably isn't mostly his fault, but he has missed some serious chances and hasn't fit into this team at all yet. Miguel Almiron looked more interested in setting up the opposing team than his own star striker partner. Those two wins against Cincy and Orlando were cool, but the 2-0 loss to the Red Bulls took the Five Stripes back down to earth, and into 24th in the league.
24. FC DALLAS (+3) | 3-3 D FCC, 0-0 D PHI

FC Dallas had an interesting pair of results to say the least. The 3-3 draw with Cincinnati was impressive from a comeback standpoint. They erased a 2-0 lead through Petar Musa finally scoring a goal and Anderson Julio with the equalizer. Luciano Acosta was heavily booed in his return to Cincy and once again did just about nothing going forward. Sebastian Ibeagha tied things up in stoppage time to rescue a point there. Fast forward a few days later, it's a complete opposite type of game but the same plus one point result. Lalas Abubakar managed two yellow cards in eight minutes during the first half of play, leaving Philly to have all that time up a man and fail to score. Dallas, like all the other middling Western teams, are still right there.
25. AUSTIN FC (-4) | 1-1 D RSL, 2-0 L SD

Austin FC is another team that is right there and probably don't deserve to be looking at past results. With that being said, they have squeaked out draws time and time again, some against solid teams. They still have zero attacking juice despite the three expensive DPs going forward. It's probably going to be time to split those guys up and look elsewhere for attacking talent sooner rather than later—this is a large enough sample size to conclude that it's not working. The defense has still been okay for the most part, but San Diego broke them down for two goals and handed them a rough loss.
26. ST. LOUIS CITY SC (+3) | 2-1 W SJ

A win for St. Louis City! Olof Mellberg probably watched in disgust as his team used the new manager bump to secure their first victory in months. The win was their third of the season and it came against a heavily rotated San Jose side. Eduard Lowen was the bright spot, he returned to the starting lineup after an extremely long absence and posted both a goal and an assist. Joao Klauss finally hit the back of the net again, so those things are good. Conrad Wallem getting a silly red card near the end was not a good thing, and neither was Cedric Teuchert leaving with what is probably a pulled hamstring. Enjoy the win becuase it's not exactly a sign of greener pastures ahead.
27. TORONTO FC (-3) | 2-1 L PHI, 2-0 L CLT

It was a losing week for Toronto FC, who got flattened in two games at home. TFC was oh so close to beating Philadelphia and ending their long unbeaten run when Ola Brynhildsen absolutely smashed one home in the 75th minute. Most Toronto fans probably still expected the looming collapse, which saw their teeam concede at 87' and 90+2'. Sean Johnson still has been playing well and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the league number-wise despite the lack of an actual soccer team in front of him. Deybi Flores has generally been good across the first half of the season as well, especially in recent matches. Toronto needs a whole new roster in 2026.
28. LA GALAXY (+2) | 1-0 L SJ, 2-0 W RSL

It could make a grown man cry. The 2025 LA Galaxy have registered a win, it only took quite literally half the season for the defending champions to complete this grueling task. They are now 13 points out of playoff position, which isn't all that bad considering they are 1-12-4—and is much more of an indictment on MLS' playoff system than anything else. Normally a team this bad would remain in the cellar for a first win in 17 games, but somehow CF Montreal is playing even worse, even though the Galaxy have one less point, and Real Salt Lake was the team to be the face of embarrassment in this case. Joseph Paintsil and Gabriel Pec actually looked a bit like themselves finally, while Matheus Nascimento gave a spark and Lucas Sanabria scored out of the midfield.
29. REAL SALT LAKE (-1) | 1-1 D ATX, 2-0 L LA

It's like when Kyle Kuzma said: "At this point it's like 'don't be that team,'" while referring to losing to the Detroit Pistons whilst they were on a 28-game losing streak in the NBA last year. Real Salt Lake was that team when it came to the LA Galaxy. They have one single player and his name is Diego Luna. Luna will go represent the USMNT and leave RSL with absolutely nothing to its name. This is an extremely rough roster that needs a serious revamp in 2025, and they are still just five points out the play-in spots. Again, that just means too many bad teams are being allowed in the playoffs, doesn't it?
30. CF MONTREAL (-4) | 4-2 L MIA, 3-0 L NE

CF Montreal has one DP, and that one DP decided to give one last contribution to his former club down in New England—though positive ones were few and far between anyway. Giacomo Vrioni was sent off early and it simply ruined his team. Montreal folded and conceded three goals after the red card. They are now 1-11-5 halfway through the season with just eight points. The season is obviously over for this team, as the Eastern Conference playoff line is going to be much higher than the West. Will it be a wake-up call to spend more money on the roster? Definitely not, because they always put a bunch of cheap guys out there and hope it sticks. Somehow, it worked back in 2022, but this team doesn't even have a player up to the quality of Djordje Mihailovic, or any of the guys they exported abroad that year anyway, those kinds of players don't just fall into your lap.
