MLS' Memorial Day Weekend of matches had a whole lot of goals. A total of 55 goals were scored across the 15 games, for an average of 3.7 per match. There were three 3-3's on Saturday, along with a 4-2 on Sunday. We are entering another double matchweek, with a whole slate of games both on Wednesday and next weekend. This will lead into an international break that will see four MLS matches played during the following weekend, prior to the Gold Cup. Some of the top teams in the East fell, while the top team in the West stands strong atop the Supporters' Shield standings. The Week 14 Power Rankings:
1. VANCOUVER WHITECAPS (-) | 3-2 W RSL

The Vancouver Whitecaps were in danger of a third straight draw when Pedro Vite struck from distance. The Whitecaps haven't been as decisive in the past few weeks, but the best team in MLS energy returned when RSL took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the match. Brian White wasted absolutely no time scoring a brace, including his first ever penalty kick goal in MLS. Vancouver continues coasting and the wait for the CONCACAF Champions Cup final continues to get shorters—it's just one midweek match against Minnesota United away from being time.
2. PHILADELPHIA UNION (+2) | 3-3 D MIA

The Philadelphia Union are going to be incredibly disappointed not to defeat Inter Miami. They fell victim to the Messi magic and allowed Telasco Segovia too much time and space to tie the game in the dying moments. Tai Baribo simply scores goals, and that's a guy that any team in the world wants on their team. He has 13 goals in 14 matches and is very much on pace to win the Golden Boot if he keeps this up. Quinn Sullivan and Kai Wagner had fabulous games per usual, but again, a 3-3 draw was not a favorable result for the new Eastern Conference leaders considering where they were in the 86th minute, but many of their Eastern foes lost games.
3. NASHVILLE SC (+3) | 2-1 W TFC

Nashville SC has pretty quietly been the most consistent team for weeks on end, after starting the seasons as the most inconsistent team possible. Nashville is now six games unbeaten in MLS play, with four of those being victories. Sam Surridge scored a pair of goals and Hany Mukhtar set one of of them up. Mukhtar also should've scored in the win over Toronto, but they got the job done regardless. They have been on a steady rise this year and are off to the best start in club history.
4. ORLANDO CITY SC (+3) | 1-0 W POR

Orlando City owns the longest unbeaten run of 12 games in Major League Soccer. At first, those unbeaten matches were draws, but they have turned into the tune of wins in the last three performances. Martin Ojeda has now been benched three times this season though, rotation is understandable but Oscar Pareja seems to be singling him out in that realm. Eduard Atuesta's return was marked by a signature line-splitting assist to finally get Duncan McGuire on the board. Orlando has figured out those defensive issues as well, so everything is feeling good at the moment for the Lions.
5. SAN DIEGO FC (+4) | 2-1 W LA

When San Diego FC went down to LA Galaxy, there wasn't much doubt that they wouldn't still win the game. Luca de la Torre got called up to the national team and equalized the game seconds after SDFC went down 1-0. Hirving Lozano scored the inevitable goal in stoppage time to earn all three points. Anders Dreyer dished out another assist and remains in top form for the expansion side that is now riding the coattails of Vancouver in the West.
6. FC CINCINNATI (-4) | 4-2 L ATL

Talking about FC Cincinnati's lack of conviction has been a weekly tradition, it caught up to them in the loss to NYCFC and it manifested even more in the 4-2 loss to Atlanta. Any time you concede the same amount of goals that your opponent scored across the last eight games in one game is not a good day at the office. Cincy should absolutely be embarrassed with their performance, from the opening kickoff. Evander can do things that no other player in the league can do, and he created seven chances in the game, but his team did not help him out. Kevin Denkey touched the ball just 19 times. Many of the wins haven't been good enough, and this certainly is far below expectations based on this roster.
7. COLUMBUS CREW (-4) | 3-2 L CLT

It was a rough week for Ohio teams, as Columbus also went down to a struggling Eastern Conference opponent. The Crew had an early lead and later tied the game at two, but they completely folded a third time to allow Charlotte three goals and a win. Steven Moreira was forced to leave in the first half, but Malte Amundsen came in and score one of the two goals. Ibrahim Aliyu scored his first Columbus goal, but the attacking positives ended there for the most part. The Crew need to respond to this loss in a big way, but the next stretch of matches makes for a real ugly time if they don't. They're playing some of the best teams in the league deep into July, so this is their litmus test.
8. LOS ANGELES FC (-2) | 2-2 D MTL

Right when it seemed like LAFC turned the corner, they've regressed to two 2-2 draws with teams that shouldn't even be competing in a matchup between the two teams. Denis Bouanga's legacy run came to an end in Montreal of all places, where he conceded a penalty kick and attempted nine shots, five of which got on target for 0.61 xG. Marc Delgado and Igor Jesus were great in the midfield, and Olivier Giroud even came in to rescue a point. Hugo Lloris also made some crucial stops to prevent a bad loss in Montreal. LAFC needs to revert to winning games, but that Club World Cup qualification match against Club America is the priority.
9. MINNESOTA UNITED (-1) | 1-1 D ATX

Minnesota United left a match against Austin FC with two less points than they needed to. Joaquin Pereyra was held down and the attack was largely kept in check. Tani Oluwaseyi was rarely on the ball but did well when he was, while Kelvin Yeboah seems to be fully benched for this team at the moment. It was central defenders who combined for the lone Minnesota goal, and that just isn't a great sign if no one else can get anything going. Still, it's not a loss and the Loons are third in the West with a really rough run of games coming up.
10. INTER MIAMI CF (+1) | 3-3 D PHI

Inter Miami finally showed some fight at the death against Philadelphia, but they're still lacking a victory. The last month has been horribly unsuccessful for the club and the skid has dropped Miami all the way to seventh in the conference. Lionel Messi contributed a classy free kick, but created zero chances. Tadeo Allende and Telasco Segovia got back on the board, though the three goals still were not enough to get back in the win column. It was a good response, but chaotic draws will only take this team so far.
11. SEATTLE SOUNDERS (+2) | 1-0 W DAL

The Seattle Sounders grabbed a tight win on the back of an Albert Rusnak penalty that apparently deserved a removal of the shirt. Cristian Roldan had a dream game for any central midfielder, winning all six tackles he attempted, completing both his dribble attempts and winning 13 of his 15 duels. The concern of Yeimar Gomez Andrade leaving in the 16th minute is large, he's going to be out for a while. This will likely speed up the return of Jackson Ragen, who will be available for the two games next week, and might even start straight away now. The rise of the Sounders has been apparent as of late, but the next three games leading into three games against some of the world's best clubs will not be easy.
12. PORTLAND TIMBERS (-2) | 1-0 L ORL

The Portland Timbers are starting to slip and fall away from the form that shot them up the table. The attack just hasn't been effective, the same scoring results from David da Costa, Santiago Moreno and Kevin Kelsy haven't been found. The stastical falloff of Antony was expected, but the whole team has followed suit. The Timbers badly need to re-learn how to score goals, as they've only put three in the back of the net across their last three games, and that's not going to win you any games. A favorable upcoming schedule will be fairly make-or-break for Portland's season.
13. NEW YORK CITY FC (+3) | 3-1 W CHI

NYCFC rode the benefit of an undisciplined Chicago Fire en route to a home victory. This team remains impossible to figure out, but a win is a win. Alonso Martinez got back on the scoresheet thanks to an incredibly questionable penalty call, but he missed an array of massive opportunities and hasn't had the same finishing boots as last season. The main criticism has been the lack of attacking help for Martinez, but the goal from Hannes Wolf and assist from Julian Fernandez tried to diminish that narrative in the win. Justin Haak also deserves a shout from the near perfect game he played at center back. It's still not extremely convincing, but for now NYCFC is squarely in the Eastern Conference race.
14. CHARLOTTE FC (+4) | 3-2 W CLB

Charlotte FC finally won a game, and they did so in a big way. Patrick Agyemang is beginning to get back into scoring form, just in time for him to leave for USMNT camp. His brace carried Charlotte through the early parts of the game, setting up Pep Biel to snatch the match-winner later on. Wilfried Zaha entered the game without an assist and he left with two, he was a pure playmaker and played an incredible ball to Agyemang to set up one of the goals, and he also assisted the winner. A job well done for Charlotte to defeat Columbus, and now they must build on this victory to get back into the mix.
15. NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION (-3) | 3-3 D SKC

A generational chokejob left New England with a draw that should be treated as a loss. Maxi Urruti salvaged a point with his first goal in two calendar years, but the damage was already done when the Revs conceded three times in eight minutes. An incredible defensive run has been dampened by two three-goal conceded performances as of late. Aljaz Ivacic had an extremely rough go at it and couldn't stop spilling balls. On the bright side, neither of those games were losses and if nothing else, the Revolution show some serious fight on a game-to-game basis. New England improved to seven games unbeaten, but the last three have been uninspiring draws. Tomas Chancalay scoring his first MLS goal since the ACL tear was huge in the 14th minute, but Caleb Porter now has a lot of things to figure ahead of two more winnable road games.
16. SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES (-2) | 3-3 D HOU

Like New England, San Jose has also had two 3-3 draws bookending the 0-0 draw they played to against those very Revs. Like Sporting Kansas City, the Earthquakes had 10 minutes of pure joy and struggled to do anything outside of that stretch. Bruce Arena's super sub injection of Preston Judd led to two crucial goals, while Daniel Munie's first MLS goal felt like the winner. Conceding the equalizer in stoppage time was not on the docket and was a very painful goal to concede. Ian Harkes played two fantastic crosses for goals. Cristian Espinoza did his normal chance creating things, but four big chances missed from Josef Martinez kept the Quakes from winning, though three goals should still be enough to win.
17. CHICAGO FIRE (-2) | 3-1 L NYC

When Brian Gutierrez isn't positively influencing games, which is often, he's doing something stupid. It has been a growing theme that Gutierrez is not a disciplined player, and he selfishly cost his team the game against NYCFC. He left a high elbow up for 32nd minute red card when his team had the lead. His brutal match paved the way for Chicago to concede three straight goals and have a second player in Dje D'Avilla sent off. It was not a penalty—or a red by extension—but that wasn't likely to make a difference in the win or loss regardless. Chicago's hot run of form in response to conceding seven goals in a match has now ended and they will need to restart that run if they want to stay in the playoff race.
18. HOUSTON DYNAMO (-1) | 3-3 D SJ

Griffin Dorsey prolonged the unbeaten run to three games with a stoppage time equalizer. Houston was on back-to-back 2-0 wins and was able to leave with a point. Felipe Andrade scored as well, but the lack of Franco Escobar on the backline contributed to the meltdown Houston had in conceding three goals in 10 minutes. It looked like the Dynamo were on pace to coast to another win, but those plans went straight out the door thanks to the collapse. Ezequiel Ponce scored a nice goal at least, but Ondrej Lingr hasn't touched the impact he had in his first few minutes of MLS play as of late.
19. COLORADO RAPIDS (+1) | 1-0 W STL

The Colorado Rapids fought through a rain delay to win a game they had to win. They did not make what is basically a scheduled win very easy, as St. Louis had the better chances, they just squandered them. Darren Yapi brought down a ball from Ted Ku-DiPietro to win the game. Djordje Mihailovic had no impact on the game and hasn't been great during the month of May. Sam Bassett was solid in his first MLS start. Nico Hansen only had to make one save, but it was a huge one for the young goalkeeper to keep his second clean sheet in three matches stepping in for Zack Steffen. Defensively, they just got the job done outside of the breakaway conceded to Cedric Teuchert.
20. NEW YORK RED BULLS (+1) | 2-0 W DC

The New York Red Bulls collected a 2-0 win over DC United, a much better result than the last time the teams met. It wasn't the guys you'd expect with the goals either, Cameron Harper put one in at the far post and Mohammed Sofo came in to score as well. Sofo has been active and has provided a needed spark to this team. Carlos Coronel completed a six-save clean sheet, while Alexander Hack was good in his return to the starting lineup for the first time in quite a while. It was simply a game RBNY had to have, and they got the job done.
21. AUSTIN FC (-2) | 1-1 D MIN

Austin FC grabbed a 1-1 draw on the road in Minnesota—which is not at all a bad result—but the compounding of bad games is dropping this team further and further. Austin has not won in six games now, with the last three being anything but lively draws. Osman Bukari got down the pitch with pace and set up Myrto Uzuni for a nice setup for Zan Kolmanic, which was promising for the DPs, but that's all they had to offer. The switch to the five-back with Guilherme Biro at center back hasn't really offered Austin much new. Brandon Vazquez was still hardly involved. ATX is clinging onto a playoff spot right now, but if the status quo remains, this team is going to be on the outside looking in soon.
22. ATLANTA UNITED (+6) | 4-2 W FCC

Oh wow, there they are! I mean, this is the Atlanta United that absolutely everyone knew could be. There's just too much proven talent and far too much money invested in this roster for Atlanta to be this bad, and the anger finally showed in a 4-2 win over Cincinnati. It wasn't perfect, and the Five Stripes still come out of halftime and give up a goal straight away practically every game, but they didn't let it define them on Sunday Night Soccer. At long last, Alexey Miranchuk came alive as the player he was always supposed to be—all three of his chances created were big ones, and two were assists. Jay Fortune was immense in the midfield, while Bartosz Slisz scored a goal and announced a baby, despite tons of criticism surrounding his play. Now, the bad—Emmanuel Latte Lath and Miguel Almiron aren't producing goals. It was the unlikely sources that showed up in a four-goal performance, but are those two going to come alive? If they do, it's a long season and Atlanta will climb into the playoffs. Latte Lath badly needs to see the ball hit the net.
23. SPORTING KANSAS CITY (+1) | 3-3 D NE

Sporting Kansas City scored three goals in eight minutes on a night that honored the life of Gadi Kinda. Daniel Salloi popped up in the big moment and started the run. SKC showed some serious passion in that time, especially after a first half where they looked like a junior varsity soccer team. They were completely played off the field and were able to tilt the pitch the other way and earn a point on an important night for everyone surrounding the club. Manu Garcia played another good game and Dejan Joveljic converted his penalty. SKC isn't a playoff team but they've shown some fight at times.
24. TORONTO FC (-2) | 2-1 L NSH

Toronto FC returned to their losing ways against Nashville, marking a run of five games where they've lost every other game. TFC grabbed a few good wins, but there's just no consistency week-to-week. Lorenzo Insigne looks like a legit player one day, then completely ghosts the next. Theo Corbeanu was held down and Federico Bernardeschi was largely ineffective, leading to another loss. Jonathan Osorio gave the few fans left in their seats an absolute belter at the death to make the score look a little better.
25. DC UNITED (-2) | 2-0 L RBNY

DC United was a mess with Christian Benteke, so now they're just a mess that can't score goals. That's now four straight MLS matches without a goal for DC, the latter three being played without Benteke for at least the most part. Jacob Murrell hasn't given them anything as the fill-in and Joao Peglow hasn't followed up that two-goal performance from last time DC played the Red Bulls yet since returning from injury. Not a whole lot left to say about DC other than that they are a very subpar MLS club with almost no redeeming qualities.
26. CF MONTREAL (+1) | 2-2 D LAFC

CF Montreal has had a lot of almost-wins against good teams this year, but those never actually end as victories. The newest version was a 2-2 draw with LAFC—a game they led 2-0 22 minutes in. Prince Owusu was all over the place and converted his penalty in the first half, while his striker pair in Giacomo Vrioni slid one in at the back stick. Vrioni does have three goals in 287 minutes of MLS play now. Dante Sealy created four chances and was running all over the wing, but all of these things were not enough to fend off the choke monster.
27. FC DALLAS (-2) | 1-0 L SEA

FC Dallas is another club without many redeeming qualities—one of them was out due to yellow card accumulation and the other was on the bench. Petar Musa really hasn't been able to ramp it back up to scoring goals. He and Acosta need to figure it out soon before the season is completely gone. Maarten Paes made a couple great saves, but the late penalty led to yet another loss.
28. REAL SALT LAKE (-2) | 3-2 L VAN

Real Salt Lake scored twice in the opening four minutes, so they must've won right? Part of it is Vancouver being a really good team, but a lot of it is RSL being a really bad one. Bad teams can have good players, though, and that's Diego Luna. Luna has become more consistent in his scoring and has been rewarded with a USMNT callup. Zavier Gozo slipped one in seconds into the game as well. For Willy Agada, it was rough time and he missed a horribly easy chance and has not at all solved the striker problem. Dominik Marczuk remained useless and even Pablo Ruiz didn't give much going forward in one of his rare starts. RSL has nowhere to go but their lone good player will probably stay for now to get consistent superstar treatment ahead of a big year for the national team.
29. ST. LOUIS CITY SC (-) | 1-0 L COL

Back again to add one to the St. Louis City winless streak. It's now 11 games. You can't help but feel bad for Marcel Hartel, who created six chances just to have none of them turned home. Cedric Teuchert missed a breakway and Joao Klauss can only score in the Open Cup. They can't even focus on the USOC, though, because they lost that game too. Olof Mellberg's firing is coming sooner rather than later and St. Louis should just look forward to the season ending.
30. LA GALAXY (-) | 2-1 L SD

They've done it again. Every week, they find a new way to sell. Marco Reus has actually been playing well recently as well—he assisted Diego Fagundez, only for San Diego to score seconds later. They then lost in stoppage time, just as everyone knew they would. Emiro Garces made a mistake that is genuinely difficult to make, he singlehandedly sprung a counter for San Diego. Gabriel Pec's transfer value was sky-high and has tanked to a low no one could've imagined, he's just not effective anymore, nor is Joseph Paintsil on the other side. It's still truly a mystery how bad this team has become, losing a few players and having one massive injury shouldn't make a team coming off a championship absolutely shatter records for the worst start in MLS history with each passing week and loss.
